G-SCOP Ph.D. students won Hackathon at the EIT Manufacturing Winter School

In November, three Ph.D. students from G-SCOP laboratory (Lucas Dalenogare, Tamara Oueidat and Walid Ijassi) participated in the first EIT Manufacturing Winter School (https://eitmanufacturing.eu/) which gathered more than 20 Ph.D. students from different universities and domains throughout Europe. The Winter School lasted one month and took place online in a virtual world called Laval Virtual where several seminars and courses happened. Four hackathons challenges were proposed: the first about PCA techniques for quality control; the second about digital twins; the third about Eco-design; and the fourth about decision analysis in new product development.

Lucas Dalenogare and Tamara Oueidat chose the fourth one and worked on a project about bladeless drones, a concept based on the bladeless fans technology, developed by Dyson. They used a propagation model to estimate the risk level of each component of the drone that could impact its structure, behaviour, and function. Then, they used influence diagrams and decision trees to make purchasing or design decisions,, and to make market estimations for production. They made extensive research about the drone market to provide data for analysis. In the end, it was really rewarding. They received excellent feedbacks from the jury and won the Hackathon. As a prize, they will have individual networking sessions with industrial partners and an invitation to attend and present the project in the next EIT Manufacturing symposium.“It was a very interesting experience, we gained new knowledge and we met students from several fields and universities around Europe" said Lucas Santos.
