Additive manufacturing platform

The research themes supported by this platform concern modeling, simulation, the digital workflow, and the use of metallic additive manufacturing resources for the design and production of products for the factory of the future.

Among the research topics addressed are:

  • architectured materials,
  • characterization and modeling of EBM and WAAM processes,
  • design and topological optimization of parts for EBM manufacturing,
  • quality control of manufactured parts,
  • development of a digital workflow for additive manufacturing,
  • management and integration of process-related knowledge during the design process.

The FABADD metallic additive manufacturing platform of the G-SCOP laboratory is integrated into the S.mart Grenoble Alpes cluster with the aim of pooling resources.

This platform currently enables experiments on two metallic additive manufacturing technologies: Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). A third machine, more specifically dedicated to teaching, can also be made available: the FDM MIM Like.

In addition to machines for producing parts using these technologies, the platform provides the means to perform finishing operations (polishing, machining of test specimens, etc.) and dimensional inspection on the manufactured products. It thus constitutes a complete experimental workflow for additive manufacturing. Other resources are currently being acquired, such as a 5-axis hybrid machine for wire laser additive, WAAM additive, and machining. Digital modeling and CAM tools (Esprit, ANSYS, Magics, etc.) available within the TRICHOLOME platform of the S.mart Grenoble Alpes cluster complement the hardware.

Investment funding comes from various sources: Grenoble INP - UGA, the CNRS INS2I institute, Carnot Énergie du futur, Labex CEMAM, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and the S.mart Grenoble Alpes platform.

This equipment, acquired in 2012, was the first to be installed at a university site in France.

This investment was made through a partnership between Labex CEMAM (Center of Excellence of Multifunctional Architectured Materials) and the S.mart Grenoble Alpes cluster, with the support of Grenoble INP and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region.

WAAM machine

This equipment was acquired in 2017 through joint investments by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, Grenoble INP, S.mart, and the G-SCOP laboratory.

The cell consists of a 2-axis external wrist and a 6-axis Yaskawa DX200 robot equipped with a Fronius CMT welding torch.

CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) technology is a specific welding technology derived from MIG/MAG arc welding, which allows for the deposition of a weld bead with better thermal control and reduced spatter.
