Abstract :

Anxiety, an anticipatory emotional response to the stress process, is common among healthcare students, particularly when preparing for clinical practice. One approach to help reduce anxiety and improve preparedness is using extended reality (XR) technologies, which can allow students to experience realistic clinical situations in a safe, controlled environment, helping them feel less anxious and more confident when encountering real-life clinical situations. The scientific literature reports that XR has become increasingly popular in healthcare education and has the potential to improve learning experiences.
This thesis investigated the design, development, use and adaptation of XR technologies, specifically augmented reality (AR), to help manage anxiety and enhance clinical readiness among midwifery students. The research was structured around three successive axes: (1) a comprehensive literature review to shape technology selection and system requirements; (2) the design, iterative development, and implementation of the XR tool following a scenario-based design methodology; and (3) the evaluation of the tool in a real educational context, followed by adaptation to a new environment and assessment.
Through immersive, interactive use of the AR system, the HoloMaïa tool supports clinical skill training. The thesis deepens understanding of how to design and evaluate an AR-based gesture simulation system to analyse anxiety in midwifery education and its effects, offering scientific, methodological, and technological insights.
